Narrative for Spaulding Hospital for Continuing Medical Care Cambridge

At Spaulding Hospital Cambridge, our staff is committed to improving our quality of care and safety of our patients. We strive for excellence while caring for chronically and critically ill patients who have many increased risk factors for skin breakdown. The average length of stay at Spaulding Hospital Cambridge is longer than many other facilities, averaging 25-30 days. We have implemented many process improvements to decrease the number of pressure injuries at our facility, including the 2nd Nurse Skin Assessment to ensure that all pressure injuries are documented within 24 hours of admission, continued staff education related to pressure injury prevention and early intervention, advanced support surfaces for pressure prevention, nurse-driven Wound Care Consults to ensure early intervention, and specialty wound care education for staff nurses (Wound Treatment Associate program). We have seen our pressure injury rates trend down over the past 2 years and continue to strive to prevent pressure injuries and provide optimal treatment for all wounds. SHC takes each PatientCareLink Pressure Ulcer Prevalence audit as an opportunity to learn and implement further improvements to our current pressure ulcer prevention program. By doing this, we can provide high quality care to all our patients and keep our clinical staff educated and competent in the care of this extremely medically complex patient population.
